DeleteClearly, Skomina has been appointed on Friday for this game after first leg score. The first half in first leg had been very difficult for Hategan, but now there shouldn't be big issues in second leg, due to final score.

Zwayer got two low profile games. A second leg in CL of a game ended 5-0. A second leg in EL of another game ended 4-1.

Similar to Oliver, but Oliver games for sure have a different meaning, especially the sonorous CL quarterfinal.
In any case, the German will make only experience there, without any real challenging test.
Zwayer isn't a candidate for Euro 2020 I think as Brych will still be around that time... Makkelie and Oliver's process are accelerated to get them ready for Euro as they are the main candidates for their respective countries whereas Zwayer is not!!

DeleteIf we compare Skomina and Mazic, we see that the latter has only two appointments so far, while Skomina three. So this should mean, at least in normal conditions, that a further appointment should be more likely for the Serbian, than Skomina. I think that, in any case, Mazic will officiate at least a CL semifinal.

Okay, now we know that Polish is injured but I'm sure without that circumstance he would be appointed in EL.
Marciniak got injured only recently, less than a week before... His season was certainly over anyway in Europe as the performance in TOT v JUV was unacceptable... Not sure if Mateu's performance in Italy v Sweden was assessed as thaaaat bad!!

ReplyDeleteAt moment, I think that only Skomina and Mazic are referees who can ensure a final appointment without looking at the nationality of the teams involved. Of course, said with all the respect for Serbia and Slovenia, we will never see club from these countries in a final. So, if committee appoint both for this season (maybe Mazic in EL and Skomina in CL), what for the future?
At moment you have: Mateu Lahoz who can't handle Spansh teams, Rocchi who can't handle Italian teams, Collum as Scottish who is avoided for British teams, Turpin who can't handle French teams and so on. So, to be honest, apart maybe from Marciniak, who still needs time now, there aren't so many "sure" options for the future. Of course, everything is possible and in a few time a referee can develop but... to be honest, I think that the pool of candidates for a final is now very small.
In this context, Královec is a missing name there, with his big experience as Elite referee, and being from a "neutral" country, he could have easily aspired to a final. Am I wrong?
Therefore, that Oliver's pushing is understandable. They need a strong referee from England NOW. I'm sure Marciniak will get a final in the future. We shouldn't forget that before the Tottenham - Juventus game, he was one of our favourite referee and many of readers considered him as one of the best, if not the best at the moment. One poor performance shouldn't disqualify him and his team.

I just quoted Ray's words above from Twitter :D That said Marciniak is a very good referee and comes with a lot of natural talent... He will be back stronger next season and I'm sure as he will continue his development, he will end up whistling many important finals in his career and there's not an iota of doubt in that... 2020 might be the year for him, let's wait... Czech Kralovec is returning to some good officiating form, this season was very good and if he continues to impress there's no reason why can't be a candidate for the Final!!

Agreed! I think its stupid that you shouldn't be considered for the final just because you'v done it before. If you're the best referee you should get the final which is why in my opinion Felix Brych should be doing the final again. I don't think anyone would argue that Brych is the most in-form referee at the moment.

In my opinion, very good appointment (second in a row) for Jaime Latre: this coming weekend a very significant match for UEL qualification. Next week, a match which could mean the official relegation of Malaga and almost the category-keeping by Levante.
All other appointments are also good because in all matches there are things in play. Maybe the only one which is not that significant is Real Sociedad - Atlético de Madrid (Alberola Rojas), because it is very difficult for Real Sociedad to qualify for UEL (at least 9 points) and it is very difficult for Atlético de Madrid to win the title (11 points). Also maybe Valencia-Getafe (de Burgos Bengoetxea), as Valencia is almost qualified to UCL (16 points to the next team) and Getafe is at least 7 points away from UEL, so although their have chances, it is quite difficult.

Let’s be clear about one thing first: Michael Oliver got the two important decisions at the end of last night’s game absolutely spot on.
Medhi Benatia’s challenge on Lucas Vázquez was a penalty. Michael will have seen from his view what was a small push by Benatia but he will also have had help from the extra assistant referee positioned behind the goal. From his angle, the assistant referee would have seen the foot wrapping around Vázquez’s body. Michael did not send the defender off, which suggests that he thought he had made a genuine attempt to get the ball. It’s a clumsy foul, but it’s still a foul.
The decision to send Buffon off is also correct. Uefa are very clear on the subject of “mobbing” officials. There was clear dissent from Buffon and what probably made Michael’s mind up to send him off was that Buffon confronted him twice.
Once is more understandable, given the emotions of what had just happened, and referees do understand why players react to decisions that are going to decide the outcome of big matches. But he went at Michael a second time, and it was more confrontational.
What he said is almost less important than the manner in which he said it. Generally when you referee European matches the players will be screaming at you in their own languages rather than in English, because they are not trying to explain to you why they think the decision is wrong, they are just angry. I began to recognise some of the most common abusive phrases in various languages."

The idea, as some at Juventus seem to be claiming, that he should have taken into account similar decisions made by other referees in previous matches, is ridiculous. People say referees want to put themselves in the spotlight but that is the last thing he will have been thinking about. What was he supposed to do? If he had not given the penalty, and got the decision wrong, can you imagine the reaction at Real?
People have to think about the demands that have been placed on Michael this week. He began with the Merseyside derby, then he had a Champions League quarter-final, and he will do West Ham United against Stoke City in the Premier League on Monday, another game that will be live on television.
Every decision he makes will be subject to scrutiny. The mental side of refereeing has become the hardest part, and that is why more and more referees are leaving the Premier League younger. The refereeing itself is fine, as is the physical side, but dealing with the pressure is the challenge.
Howard Webb left the Premier League early, I did the same, Graham Poll was another and Phil Dowd has stepped down recently. When a senior referee leaves early, that is 20 big games a season that the younger guys, who are still learning, have to take on.
Michael is the best referee in the Premier League and at 33 he still has five years before he even reaches his peak, which is usually between 38 and 41. He is young and fit, and he reads the game well.
The reaction to Wednesday will be a test for him, even though he can watch the game back and see he did well. There has been a huge angry reaction in Italy, but it really has nothing to do with his performance. He won’t be able to ignore that reaction, but it’s good that he does not have social media accounts.
There is no reason why Michael will not referee finals in the next few years. But there is a problem that the pressures of refereeing are making careers at the top level shorter. This applies to other countries in Europe as well.
People have said that the absence of an English referee from the World Cup finals this summer is a sign of declining standards but they are wrong. That was solely down to my decision to move to Saudi Arabia, when I had been the English referee on the list. It was too late for a replacement, and only ten referees can make the final cut anyway, so the standard is very high, and some very experienced international officials, such as Jonas Eriksson from Sweden, will not be going. Michael shows the standard in England is still high."

DeleteI can report same positive things from Serbian crew in Lisbon. As always, excellent positioning and fitness. Also great rapport with troublemakers among players (Diego Costa) and coaches (Diego Simeone). Great spot that there was a foul of attacking player at first in Sporting CP penalty area (16'). The only YC issued for a very reckless use of elbow, but still as a tool (29'). Milovan Ristić with a hawk eye, some really tight offsides rightly flagged up.

DeleteSkomina isn't challengend very much (his biggest problem are some paper balls on the pitch ;) ). Very little number of fouls, I think one missed foul. The AR's with correct calls so far. Summarized, everything is under control.
Yeah, both Costa and Simeone reacted with a huge respect towards Serbian. They even shook hands with Mazic when he approached them to warn them.

Faultless Mazic. Well done! Now the CL final appointment will be a sad news for either Skomina or Mazic. I would like to see Serbian get this game and Skomina in next season. It would be the best diplomatic solution, if you ask me.

DeleteWe often praise ARs of Çakir, Brych, Kuipers etc and call them best in the Europe but we don't mention Serbs with the same attribute and they totally deserve that.
I have an idea to make one big study about Serbian ARs about parcentage of correct decisions since their first match in CL/EL. If i succes, I would be very happy to share the results with visitors of this blog :)

DeleteDidn't get to watch a single game tonight, but I am very proud to read that Mazic and his crew were faultless. They are in a great shape for a long time, excellent refereeing, they grew up as a team, they are very, very experienced now and therefore it is expected for them to perform like they did tonight. For me it is non explainable why Mazic didn't get anything last year - he was brilliant in EL 1/4 finals in Istanbul all 120 minutes and after that match we didn't see them at all. I believe he deserved CL final, but one never knows with Collina.
DeleteAbout Milovan Ristic - I wrote several times on this and the blog before this (3rd team) that for me he is probably the best AR in Europe. Almost always faultless, real hawk eye, not only in Europe but also in domestic league. If not the best, he is for sure in top 3 ARs in Europe.
Skomina was always one of my favorites (Marciniak also), but I believe that we should see Skomina in CL semifinal this year, and in CL final next year. For EL final this year for me strong candidate become Rocchi, after Lazio's loss tonight.
So, Mazic and Rocchi for the finals, Skomina, Cakir, Kuipers (no matter this offside goal tonight) and maybe Brych (maybe due to Bayern) for semis!
Honestly speaking if the offside mistakes are considered, Kuipers and Brych might miss out!!

DeleteBut who for EL final then? Maybe Rocchi could get CL semifinal and EL final after that, but that could be risky. Very risky. What if he makes significant mistake? I believe that Collina will save two officials for the final - they will get only final matches and no the semis. This should be reasonable. But Collina obviously likes to gamble. So maybe we will see Mazic, Skomina and Rocchi all in semis, and expect their "fight" for the finals. This scenario is not impossible with Collina.

DeleteThere have been similar mistakes before (Benteke's miss in Liverpool-Leicester game) as these situations are very unusual by nature but unacceptable at this level for sure.

Very solid Skomina yesterday evening. One wrong YC in minute 64 (Lucas/Lazio), otherwise a very calm and confident performance with a really strong personality. 8.3 would be my mark. AR1 with a very close offside decision which denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. Play on would be the better decision but I think he can be backed.
