    2. Interesting to see Marcos Quintero Huitrón (MEX) assigned to the tournament. He is set to serve a 5 match ban at the begining of the 2018/2019 Liga MX season for pulling the shirt of a Tijuana player during a Quarterfinal match.

Peter, Chile Romania seems the most sonorous clash among the friendly, How do you judge C. Jager ? Is he a promising talent ?

Any word on the new UEFA Referee Categories? As far as I know, the meeting took place last Saturday.

    2. Yes, last Saturday. Traditionally the last years this meeting takes place on the day of the CL Final.

  9. Till now the only Elite ref in action is Ovidiu Hategan it seems... Where are the others?? Referees like Oliver, Taylor, Eriksson, Kassai should all be free in June!!

    1. Maybe one of them is for France - Italy.
      Kassai?

      Delete
    2. I would prefer Oliver or Taylor in that... Considering I saw Taylor in Spain v Argentina earlier in March I would like to Oliver in this one!!

      Delete
    3. It's not good to see Oliver refereeing Italy national team match. Big number of Juventus' players are Italians of course.

      Delete
    4. Indeed at moment Oliver is not possible with Italy. Just for this reason, I didn't consider him. Maybe Taylor...

    5. Oh yes I forgot about that thing... Then it maybe Taylor... I can also someone like Hategan or Eriksson over there as well

    6. Kralovec is another appointed Elite referee.

Pierluigi Collina opens up on a lot of things finally... From his assessment it seems like Michael Oliver is destined for some big appointments next season and Mateu Lahoz just the opposite... But great to hear some honest assessments from the man about the dip in standards!!

    1. I am curious to see which referees he considers to be the UEFA "academy" as he calls them.

I think that he has to prepare those referees on the personality sector.

      Delete
    2. Maybe he's talking about those 1st group refs who are in line for promotion to Elite??

      Delete
    3. Im expecting Danilo Grujic to be promoted soon to 1st group. As i remember he was in second group before he got removed from FIFA list 2 years ago.
I wont be suprised if Oliver get any final next year.

      Delete
    4. Final would be too early... But you can definitely expect Oliver to pick up some sonorous games from the playoff stage itself!!

      Delete
    5. According to my record, Grujic was Third Group before removed.

Jovanovic was the one promoted to Second Group on December 2015.

      Delete
    6. I don't know from where you get that expectations for Mateu Lahoz. In that interview, Collina admits a mistake (in which he also mentions one by Skomina, by the way, but it seems you decided to omit that part), but says nothing more (as is expected, he won't voluntarily throw his referees to the press pressure). The same can be said about Oliver. He backs him in the penalty decision and about the appointment. But expectations for either Skomina, Mateu, Marciniak, Çakir and others won't change with this words. Specially given he talked about single mistakes and not full performances. Referees make mistakes, and unfortunately too many of them this season have suffered those problems.

      Delete
    7. I agree with George, let me say, Soham, sometimes you come too early to draw conclusions. Collina jsut said that the wrong offside in Manchester City - Liverpool was an evident mistake and VAR would have solved it. It was for sure a paramount example. Nothing more than that.
Mateu Lahoz appointments for next week are a different topic, we have also World Cup "in the middle...".
The same can be said for Oliver of course, by stating that it was even a correct decision, or at least a decision based on his discretion and fully supportable, doesn't include that Oliver will get always sonorous matches in future. There will be time, time will answer. Sometimes I have the feeling you want always to decide everything by yourself without waiting, that's not the first time. Please don't misunderstand me, nothing against you, rather, I would like to know if I'm wrong :)

      Delete
    8. I omitted Skomina because Collina explained about not even the players noticing that handball which was not whistled so of course it is not assessed as some very grave error... But the Sane goal he talked about it more than once and explained how it's a fact based error and not interpretation based... That just made me think that Mateu's error has been kind of far more blatant and evident than the others to the Committee and it indeed is!! The words "seems like", "might be", "most probably" mean that what I say are just probabilities of it happening based on what I feel after reading something!! Someone with a good performance with correct decisions are more likely to get sonorous appointments and someone with an evident mistake less likely and that's just logic!!

      Delete
    9. I don't think logical predictions are bad... Based on a sequence of events there is always something more likely to happen and something less likely to happen... I'm just stating it which is more probable of happening, that's it and not necessarily that is definitely going to happen... And of course I wasn't talking about Mateu Lahoz's WC appointments here in any way!!

      Delete
    10. Also I find it weird that PLC decided to speak now for the Oliver's penalty and not immediately after the match. That statement would have been more valuable at that time.

      Delete
    11. Now, after two good performances of referees in both finals, is much more easy for PLC to speak...
This season was a disaster. It is obvious that PLC felt the pressure. Otherwise he would not have sent Kuipers to EL final. He was really desperate, otherwise he would not have break an unwritten rule (no referee with 2 finals)

    1. It is funny how things go in this life… many years ago, this penalty was given to Real Madrid (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ld-82xWh37I) when they were fighting for LaLiga with Valencia (Valencia won the title in the end, but that was an important match). Madrid's press reaction was this: https://as.com/masdeporte/2004/02/17/polideportivo/1076994913_850215.html They went to judo specialists who considered it an "ushiro-nage" from that sport.

14 years later, an european judo association compares a foul committed by one of their players with something from that sport too. Funny coincidences (at least to me).

That said, for me it was a foul but nothing more. Yes, Salah puts the arm first, but then it's Ramos who traps it and brings him down.

    2. Thank you, George. I don't remember that penalty but it's definitely an interesting one.

    00:20 punishable offside?
03:20 maybe extremely tight offside, but AR2 anticipated his running toward penalty area without following the game, he had to stay on line in the midfield, because all players from Italy (defenders) were on the other half of the pitch until a certain moment. In any case, this assessment was impossible for him, given his positioning...

    1. for the first offside, absolutely correct decision imo. the GK is impeded by the attacker's move towards the ball and he is forced to punch the ball away.

    1. The absolute worst message you can possibly send to the players. Without fear of sanctions, players are going to "push" the limits of what is acceptable and safe. I guess nothing was learned by the Ref Comm after Brasil 2014.

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." Busacca, you listening or paying attention?

      Delete
    2. I have a huge fear that we will hae a repeated 2002 WC.

      Delete
    3. Marciniak talks so much and he releases always interviews... I don't know how much UEFA and FIFA could like this attitude. For example, Italian referees can't do that.

      Delete
    4. Yeah... He even stated in another interview on TV that the Ramos-Salah duel was a normal one and the game was rightly continued. What is interesting, his statement has been later cut out from the official video posted in the web.

      Delete
    5. Then FIFA needs to change rules for player suspensions.Right now it is 2 bookings and you are suspended, they should IMO clear all bookings after group stage and then maybe we will see even better refereeing.

      Delete
    6. I agree with 2 bookings resulting in a suspension in the group stages. However once the teams move into the knock out stages. The players should start off with a clean slate. And because the teams who make it to the Final play a total of 4 matches. Then the rules should change to "3" bookings equal a suspension. There is absolutely no reason for any player to pick up a booking in three consecutive matches. They've gotta be smarter and play smarter to avoid this type of situation. But if a player does do this. Then they fully deserve to miss the Final because of suspension.

      Delete
    7. And I personally like Marciniak being open and honest. It helps with the transparency which a lot of us seek from referee's and Ref Comm's. Operating in complete secrecy bings more problems and headaches than positive things.

      Delete
    8. Yellow cards were developed and evolved as a tool to manage games, not to be technical demerits that could lead to suspension in another match. I would be all for abolishing all yellow card accumulation rules and just telling referees to enforce the Laws. These tournament rules are simply not good for the sport. Who cares if a player gets 3 or 4 yellow cards in 5 matches? Or 2 yellow cards in 3 matches? The only people benefiting from such rules are teams that have nothing to do with the yellow cards.

Suspensions for red cards only would be my rule if I were in charge.

If FIFA MUST have a yellow card accumulation rule, I would say that you are suspended after 3 yellow cards but if your team makes it to the semifinals without you getting your 3rd, then 1 yellow card gets erased (so you can't be suspended from the final on accumulation). So the only possible suspensions would be for R16, QF or SF and you'd have to REALLY earn it (3 yellows in 5 or fewer matches).

      Delete
    9. All teams have "something" to do with the yellow cards. If a team is better disciplined and shows it on the pitch. They should be rewarded by having all of their players available for their matches. On the other hand, undisciplined teams, whose players continuously or egregiously break the Laws. Deserve to face punishment by having players suspended. Protect those who come out to play and do away with those who simply choose to infringe the Laws of the Game. Fans want to see more Messi's and less Ramos'.

      Delete
    10. So much of troll stuffs in here by the usual expected person... Just hoping that FIFA doesn't pick these up!!

    11. God forbid that the referee's simply enforce The Laws of the Game. Because your and FIFA's "way" was such a joy to watch in Brasil 2014. Russia 2018 = Brasil 2014 version 2.0

    2. To be honest, I'm not still so sure, maybe VAR officials had not evidence. Balotelli is with a foot inside and the other one outside.
In any case I think that the English VAR is by far less active than the other ones made by officials from other countries. In Italy for these two situations there would have been for sure at least very long consultations.
The sensation is that they don't want to intervene at all.

      Delete
    3. But the contact with left foot is inside the box, as well as the push.

    4. Yet another case of VAR failure? Things are looking quite promising for the World Cup.

The footage can be there and be crystal clear (as this one is). Yet referee's will still manage to convince themselves of seeing something that isn't backed by the images. As is the case here, with some casting doubt and excusing the VAR referee that failed.

    7. I'm not really defending it but then friendly and all that :) These type of decisions are often given as only YC in England as Mikael points out... In a competitive match maybe he would've gone for a red I hope! In World Cup such situations will be corrected by VAR thankfully!

      Delete
    8. Just to clarify my comment, I think it would a joke if that decision is considered acceptable. Such a dangerous tackle.
But I fear in England maybe it would be considered okay for a YC, but I am not sure about that, and really hope for the contrary.

    9. English football is slowly but surely crawling backwards towards that hard, brutal, violent, and unattractive style which characterized it in the late 80's and early 90's.

      Delete
    10. The problem is that it actually isn't, Premier League is a very specific type of football that is apparently extremely popular around the world, and as the clubs (as a collective) have a reasonably big input into what format of refereeing we see in England, naturally they are very lenient, too much so for my taste.

      Delete
    11. We agree on the leniency aspect Mikael. Unfortunately I feel as if this sets up their referee's for failure. As they are widely portrayed as either incompetent or overly permissive and lenient softies.

I don't think these games are based on a reciprocity with romanian football federation (last home friendlies of Romania were not whistled by referees from Kuweit, Russia or Belgium). Most probable there were special invitations for Hategan.
